Do Not Go Quietly w/ Eric Wilson

Frederick Alexander said ”People do not decide their futures, they decide their habits and their habits decide their futures” Eric Wilson is a former college football coach and now 20 year entrepreneur who has seen this time & again in both his personal life and career path. In this podcast Eric does his best to explore the secret to discovering passion and purpose; something that seems to be an increasingly elusive task. In talking with people who excel in their field he explores what we are missing in today’s society, why so many people seem to be searching for something they can’t find, & how to battle the challenges we all face in order to create a life of purpose. Do Not Go Quietly is a challenge to everyone not to settle, but to strive for a life of commitment, passion, and purpose. #sufferwell

At the close of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the early pioneers of today’s sportsmen’s conservation community faced a unique set of challenges. As a result of market hunting, purposeful extirpation, and general exploitation of natural resources, many game species were at historically low population levels throughout much of their historical range. The early champions of today’s conservation ethic, such as President Theodore Roosevelt, George Bird Grinnell, and Gifford Pichot, faced this challenge head on. Through their efforts and those of others, was born the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation which set in place the tenets that define our approach to wildlife conservation to this day. During this period state fish and wildlife agencies were formed, and game laws were implemented to regulate harvest. Additionally, we saw the birth of the “user-pays, public benefit” American System of Conservation Funding through which sportsmen and women provide long-term and sustainable funding for the agencies tasked with managing the vast majority of our nation’s game species. Complementary efforts effectively shut down market hunting, established what is today the Fish and Wildlife Service, and set aside public lands to be conserved.
As a result of the laudable work of these early conservationists, sportsmen and women in the later 20th century were able to experience the “golden age” of hunting. Popular game species returned to at or near historic highs, hunting was a vibrant part of our culture throughout much of the nation, and state fish and wildlife agencies were well funded, held in high regard, and effectively carried out their missions of scientific management of game species.

Chris Hunt is telling a story ..... and people are listening. His Instagram account The Code of the West has rocketed from 5K followers in February to almost 88K at the time of this posting.
Our conversation started as the genesis of COTW but it didn't take long for two guys who love literature and thinkers to start nerding out on Carl Jung. We talked about some of his painful personal history and explored how freeing himself from the restrictions of analysis has allowed him to regain the artistry of storytelling. In a way, while creating a new journey for all of the COTW followers, Chris has created a new journey for himself at the same time.
This is a real one - Eric
Chris is a former comic book writer and artist turned creative director. An adopted son of The West since childhood, Hunt founded Code Of The West in an effort to marry his two backgrounds in an attempt to reignite the shared story we use to all have as Americans, while also inspiring ourselves to be better tomorrow.

2 minutes and you will know why I call Cliff the Pirate.  He's a laid back dude who jumps between spear fishing in Puerto Rico & big game hunting the west.
We had a great conversation discussing his episode on Joe Rogan, his rise to You Tube sex symbol, and his transition from being a guide business owner to his new venture in 1 on 1 hunting camps for hunters trying to shorten the learning curve out west.
After a short stint as a financial trader, Cliff left the corporate world to found and operate some of the largest and most remote wilderness outfitting businesses in North America.
Cliff is an avid outdoorsman, pilot and certified wilderness first responder. He has personally guided dozens of big game hunts, while his previous businesses have operated more than a thousand wilderness expeditions.
Before pissing them away to become a hunting guide, Cliff earned degrees from Stanford University and University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business.
Cliff sold all of his operating outfitting businesses in 2021 to become a YouTuber and make his parents proud.

The Bugler - Dirk Durham

Tuesday Mar 26, 2024

Tuesday Mar 26, 2024

A native of Idaho, he has spent his life perfecting his craft and chasing screaming bulls with great success. Dirk is also the marketing manager for Phelps Game Calls, co-host of the Cutting the Distance Podcast, and creates all of the amazing films you see on his own You Tube Channel. His latest, Ghost Bulls of the North, is a great watch.
While we do talk bugling in this episode, the initial part of our conversation focused around the evolution of wolves in Idaho, how they were introduced, how they have evolved, and the impact they have had on the Idaho elk population and hunting.
In addition, we discussed the Idaho draw process, how to hunt really nasty terrain, and ways to navigate the increased pressure caused by new hunters. Part of our conversation focused around the sense of solitude we enjoy as hunters that is more and more being threatened by the rise in popularity of western hunting as well as the changes of etiquette among hunters on the mountain.
And of course we talked about bugling, the development of the Phelps Maverick call, and other good elk calling stuff.
This was my first time having Dirk on the podcast and I hope to have him back in the future. He is one of those guys who, after just speaking for a few minutes, I recognized as a truly genuine person and someone I hope to spend more time with in the future.
Thank you Dirk for joining me. It was a privilege. I hope ya'll enjoy this conversation.

18 months ago I sat at a table with Bert Sorin listening to him discuss bowhunting whitetail. I have spent the majority of my last 30 years on a football field in the fall but know that in the fall of 2023 I would not be coaching and that the 2022 season might be my last. I was wondering what I was going to do with my time. A mutual friend introduced me to Bert and I asked him to lunch knowing he was an avid hunter.
As he showed me the Huntstand app and discussed hunting strategy, my mind was spinning 100 miles an hour. I knew nothing about hunting but the strategy of it resonated with the coach in me. After that meeting, and over the course of the next month, I decided I was going to spend the entire winter and spring trying to figure out how to take on the challenge of bowhunting whitetail during the fall of 2024.
This is a short summary of my 2023 season. Failures in SC, a big win in Illinois, and in general the ups and downs of a hunter. It is nothing unique. Other hunters go through it year after year. The only thing unique about it was that I was tackling this challenge at the age of 55.
Here I am now 18 months later and I am, like so many others, changed completely. The piece I feel in the woods, the connection I feel to the animals I hunt, and the preparation it takes to even attempt bowhunting has left an indelible imprint on me.
I will do this as long as the Lord gives me the ability to. Thanks for listening.

If you are new to the Western Hunting game this episode is for you.
Trail Kreitzer a legitimate backcountry hunter and one hell of a guy. He is one of the go-to sources of information for Western Big Game Hunting in print and on social media.
As a member of the Go Hunt team, he is a host of the Big Hunt Guys Podcast, an author of numerous hunting strategy articles, and is featured each year in a number of the professionally created Go Hunt films.
Trail frequently discusses his passion for Elk hunting on the Go Hunt podcast and the majority of our conversation focused around Elk and the many facets of preparing for and taking on a backcountry elk hunt.
While much of this information is standard for existing western hunters, I wanted to utilize our time together to provide a launching point for eastern hunters who are either preparing for a western hunt or have wanted to take on the western big game but have been intimidated by the draw process, difference in topography, or necessary changes in hunting strategy.
I did my best to cast a broad net around all the basics of elk hunting with a bit of mule deer sprinkled in. Nothing is drilled down to the fine details. Rather I tried to cover all over the bases so you would know were to start. From essential gear, to glassing strategy, to evaluating road on mapping software, to what to do with an elk herd once you find them we took a big swing at helping you get ready for your western backcountry hunt. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

If you know whitetails, you know Joe Miles. Joe is the founder of Asio Gear as well as the leader of the Mission Whitetail podcast.
Joe grew up hunting and when I say that, I am not exaggerating. He told me the story of waking up at 3 years old in a sleeping bag under a tree in the middle of the woods. Having no idea where he was, Joe felt something fall and hit him on the head. It was a piece of candy that his father, smiling ear to ear, had dropped from the tree. Joe killed his first buck at 5 years old and he's been chasing these beautiful animals ever since.
We talked about my rookie bowhunting season, Joe's renewed love of rut hunting, setting up and hunting true funnels, hunting southern swamps, and of course our successes and failures of 2023. Joe hunts all over the world but his passion is whitetail hunting.
Joe started ASIO Gear out of a passion for whitetail bowhunting. He is an over-the-top whitetail bowhunter of 30 years who was looking for a way to take his bowhunting to the next level. In the end, he created a never-before-seen camo pattern that he knew would do exactly that. In short, make him better at what he loved doing most.
Joe's goal for ASIO Gear was to create a high end whitetail hunting apparel line that could maximize bowhunters’ efficiency and effectiveness while bowhunting from a tree. ASIO Gear offers a camouflage pattern that has never been seen before. The ASIO RAPTOR CAMO® pattern was inspired by the feather pattern and blend of the most majestic of tree predators and master of camouflage, the owl.
ASIO is a pattern that works in the deep woods of the South just as well as the leaf-barren hardwoods of the Northeast in the winter. One of a kind, the ASIO RAPTOR CAMO® pattern blends perfectly in any tree, in any part of the whitetail range, giving bowhunters flexibility no matter where they roam.

ELKSHAPE: Hustle & Grind

Monday Dec 18, 2023

Monday Dec 18, 2023

Dan Staton's Youtube Channel states .... " We love hard work and the flight of the arrow." That is a great summary of the way Dan Staton approaches his life and business. The Elkshape channel, and brand, has become one of the most influential in the hunting community. Dan and I discussed the recent release of his film 60 hrs to kick things off.
The film is covers his entire month of September archery Elk hunting. Rather than making a multiple episode season, Dan put all of his September into one film that is easy to digest. This ran the gamut of hunting for 25 days before he took a bull elk and then taking 2 in 2 days. From having his motorcycle break down in the field to realizing he had left his wallet at the gas station a week earlier, we had some laughs over his pain.
The backdrop to all of this, of course, is that hunting is HARD. As hunters we constantly have to overcome the difficulties that each day in the field throws at us. Those who can overcome not just the physical, but the mental stressors each day, are the hunters that see success year after year. As a new hunter, guys like Dan inspire me to constantly strive to be a better version of myself.
We also took time to talk about how a small experiment with YouTube in 2013 has turned into a serious brand in the hunting community and a career. Dan is an inspiration as a hunter, as a guy who trains hard to prepare himself, and as an entrepreneur. It was a real pleasure to sit down with Dan. He's a guy I would love to have the chance to hunt with some day and the kind of guy you would want in your foxhole if SHTF.
Dan, I appreciate you brother. Thank you
